HISTORY OF THE PLACE
The “hot dog house” or the “hot dog stand”, as some of the locals affectionately call the upper house, was built in the late 1930’s, and or, the early 1940’s to sell hot dogs to the local hikers walking up Mt. Tam.
Originally, the street was the primary hiking trail up Mt. Tam. Initially called “Liberty Trail”, now called “Pipeline” because there was an old water tower that fed water to town that now only leaves a dilapidated, riveted pipeline exposed on part of the trail that goes up the road to the Mountain Home Inn. This charming local inn is about a 15 minute walk away, and has a big great room with views of the ocean and the bay, and is a charming small hotel for hosting events and having a small dinner nearby.
As one walks down the property, and onto the lower Cypress Trail, there is easy access to the Dipsea Trail, which take you to town with a 20 minute walk or to the Pacific Ocean with a 6 mile hike. Downtown Mill Valley has great restaurants and hotels, and in particular, the Mill Valley Inn is a partner with discounts to those who are staying here.
The hot dog stand was built to sell food to the hikers. Cooked and prepared by the log cabin below now referred to as Dharmashire.
